Red-necked Stint

Birds of Sandy Point & Shallow Inlet

COMMON NAME: Red-necked Stint

CATEGORIES: Beach Inlet Migratory

LOCAL NOTES:

Red-necked Stints are tiny grey and white waders that are often found in large groups running swiftly along the water’s edge on the spit, stopping to probe the sand for molluscs and crustaceans.

They can also be seen feeding on the mudflats at the inlet or sheltering in the foredunes.

You might spot them in mixed groups with the similar looking Sanderlings, or with slightly larger birds such as Curlew Sandpipers.
