Agapanthus (weed)

Agapanthus praecox ssp. orientalis

COMMON NAME : Agapanthus

BOTANICAL NAME : Agapanthus praecox ssp. orientalis

FAMILY : Liliaceae-Agapanthaceae

PLANT GROUP : Weeds

LOCAL NOTES:

Initially planted by locals as a hardy, summer flowering perennial plant with either mauve-blue or white flowers.

Agapanthus is a garden escape surviving on our roadsides, nature strips and even extending into coastal dune scrub.

Removing spent flower heads by cutting them off and placing them in kerbside green waste will reduce their spread locally and, if opportunity arises, consider planting indigenous Dianella revoluta (Coastal Flax-lily) instead, or alternatively a local indigenous grass.
