We will be focused on weeding the Blue Periwinkle (Vinca major) along the edge of the Roy Henderson Trail.

Park at:     Inlet Carpark (5minute walk away)

Bring:        Protective clothing and shoes suitable for the weather.

After the event …

16 volunteers attended in sunny springlike weather between 1-3 pm in the afternoon. Most focused on weeding the Blue Periwinkle (Vinca major) along the edge of the Roy Henderson trail which was an unenviable task. The wirelike stems and leaves proved difficult to remove leaving masses of dense fine roots immediately below the surface. Volunteers tackled the most difficult areas after having weeded the area closer to the picnic table where early invasion and vegetative spread had occurred. All manner of tools and techniques were attempted but sheer hard work won out and 8 green bins were filled with plant and root matter. This looks likely to be a challenging task ongoing.

Spraying and likely some continued physical removal will be required before the trackside area can be planted in Autumn with local indigenous grasses.

Arum lilies were also a focus of attention as were continued efforts to control Sweet Pittosporum (Pittosporum undulatum) and Mirror Bush (Coprosma repens).

Walkers enjoying the trail complimented and thanked the volunteers, GREAT WORK everyone. Laura, the Coastcare facilitator, attended and proved to be a great bird spotter - identifying a colourful spotted pardalote in the eucalypt close to the picnic table.
